Most big-brand soaps contain harsh chemicals that can irritate and dry out
the skin. The glycerin is also removed and used in other, more profitable
products such as cosmetics, medicine, printing inks, etc.
Instead, Farm Maid Goat’s Milk Soap is made from natural, gentle
ingredients that leave skin moisturized and soothed. Plus, the glycerin
remains in our soap – providing skin with deep moisturizing benefits!*
Many people prefer the gentleness of goat’s milk soap and for those who
have sensitive skin or eczema, goat’s milk soap is a godsend.
The “ph” of Goat Milk Soap
Many goat milk soap companies use the pH of goat milk as a selling point of why it is good for your skin. Although I agree with them that it is better for your skin – using the pH of the milk is not a good reason.
The surface of our skin naturally creates a barrier called the acid mantle. This barrier helps to keep out viruses & bacteria (and other yuckies and nasties). This barrier is normally a little acidic, with a pH of 5-6. Most handmade soap has a pH of 9-10.
I believe people get confused because the pH of goat milk is usually around 6 and the pH of water is 7 (neutral). This may lead to the misconception that soap made with goat milk has a lower pH than soap made with water. This is simply not true – nor is it sound science.
The pH issue is often used as a marketing ploy. One marketing phrase is to say that a cosmetic is “pH balanaced”. This can mean many things: balanced to 7; balanced to match a target area; balanced to not vary more than 2 points on the pH scale; and more. Another pitch is to say that a “low pH” soap, body wash or cleanser is better for your skin. Our skin barrier can be impacted negatively by something as pure as distilled water and a lower pH cleanser will affect the acid mantle – just as a higher pH one does. Generally speaking, the pH of the soap you use is a non-issue because our skin replaces the acid mantle quickly.
Goat milk soap is better for your skin – not because of the pH – but because of the vitamins, nutrients and moisturizers that the milk provides. Give it a try and feel the difference.

How long will a bar of Farm Maid Goat Milk Soap last?
Many people ask us, “How long will a bar of your goat milk soap last?” Well…that’s a bit of a loaded question. In our household of 8 people (who all wash their hair with the soap) a bar does not last as long as it does at Gramma & Grampa’s house with just 2 people.
A better way for us to talk about this is on a hardness scale. If a bar of Ivory* is a 10 on a scale of 1 to 10 and a brand new bar of Tone* or Caress* (that just mush away) is around a 3….we are going to come in at about a 7.5 or an 8. That’s a pretty hard bar for a moisturizing bar of soap.
Now, I can make you soap that will last as long as a bar of Ivory*. However, your skin will be just as dry as if you used the Ivory* bar!
Our soap recipe and process are our own. We use only high quality vegetable oils and fresh goat milk to create a well balanced bar with great lather and excellent moisturizing properties.
Is our soap right for you? I don’t know. What I can tell you is we’ve have been making soap for over 12 years, it is what we do full-time (this is not just a hobby – it is our family’s full time income) and we have tons of repeat customers.
*Farm Maid Soap is not associated with Ivory, Tone or Caress which are trademarked and manufactured by Proctor & Gamble, Dial and Unilever, respectively.
What percentage of goat milk is your soap?
Sometimes we get asked, “How much goat’s milk is in your soap?” or “What percentage of goat milk do your bars contain?”
The question regarding milk percentages kind of depends and may not tell the whole story.
Often times it refers to the amount of milk compared to the amount of oils. In this case – our soap would be considered a 25% goat’s milk soap. Again, there is more to the story…
The breeds of goats that we use for milk provide higher amounts of solids (fat, proteins, etc) in their milk than some breeds. This allows us to use less milk (which provides a harder, longer lasting bar) than some other companies, while still providing lots of extra moisture & nutrients. If we were to use milk from a breed with less solids, we would need to use a higher percentage of milk to achieve the same amount of soothing moisture. Then the bar would have a higher liquid content and thus the soap would be softer. However, we would get to say that our soap contains 33% milk.
To complicate things, the base oils also play into the chemistry of moisture balance in the soap. As an example, soaps that are too high in coconut oil can cause dryness. Contrarily, soaps that do not contain enough “hard” oils may be over moisturizing and can also tend to mush away and not last very long. Our soap has a great balance between moisture, nutrients & bar hardness.
